Renger Koning is a Dutch film composer who has won two Buma Awards. His first in 2017 for Best Film Score for Bezness as Usual directed by Alex Pitstra, and his second in 2022 for De Panter, a contemporary dance production by choreographer Dunja Joçic.
After working in advertising for several years, Renger made the transition to composing for film and documentaries in 2012. His notable works include Die Welt, Safe, My Name is Nobody, Blind Date (short animation), and The Occupant(2020). His music blends live instruments and electronics, always with a focus on emotional depth.
As Renger states: “I want to write memorable melodies that touch people's hearts.”
In addition to his composing work, Renger has been deeply involved in the music industry. He is a member of the Raad van Rechthebbenden at Buma Stemra (on behalf of BCMM) and was a board member of Buma Cultuur from 2014 to 2020, serving as Chairman from 2019-2020. Since 2012, he has also been a board member of BCMM, the Dutch association of media and film composers, and a member of DFC (Dutch Film Composers).
Renger's collaboration with choreographer Dunja Joçic has been especially fruitful. The partnership began with the dance piece The Resident in 2019, which led to De Panter, a production that won Joçic a Swan Award for Best Contemporary Dance Production in 2021. In the same year, Renger received his second Buma Award for his score. The duo continued working together on several productions, including The Previous Owner, We, Us and Other Games (for Spellbound Dance Company, Rome/Italy), and Het gras hier is groener.
In 2022, Renger composed a 65-minute score for Siba Sahabi's dance production Skiagraphia, directed by Marinus Groothof. His music for the immersive theatre production Hotel Wonderland (2023), which earned a Buma Award nomination, involved over four hours of music, created in collaboration with Cinereal Los Angeles.
Looking ahead, Renger has several projects on the horizon. In 2024, he composed the score for The Occupant, a science fiction thriller directed by Hugo Keijzer, set for release in 2025. He also scored The Gate, another dance piece by Dunja Joçic, which premiered in March 2024 in Bielefeld, Germany. Other upcoming projects include Sobibor, a documentary series for Submarine & BNNVARA (release Q4 2025), and Night at the Museum, a theatre production premiering on May 25, 2024. Additionally, he is working on The Whole World’s Gone Missing, a full orchestral piece set to premiere in February 2025 in Wiesbaden.
